Food is a universal language that goes beyond simply being sustenance with its ability to bring people together and tell a story. Global food cultures, especially in Black communities, have created traditions and cooking techniques that have become the heartbeat of who they are. Food is very much a part of one’s identity and is transformative in understanding people, communities, cultures and history.
The Global Black Food Learning Hub will serve as a centralized digital education center for those wanting to learn more about Black food cultures throughout the world. From Africa to the Caribbean, into the United States, Canada, South America and beyond, this hub will play an important role in how stories are told and narratives are created and how they are shared with the world.
Celebrating Global Black Food Cultures Through Education
As one of the pillars of our work, food education, especially when looking at food and identity is invaluable and powerful. The Global Food Learning Hub is the first resource that aims to bring together journalists, academic scholars, research and field contributions for the purpose of sharing the history of food through ingredients, dishes, cooking traditions and techniques, foodways. In addition, through the education of food, look at global influences that have originated from the continent of Africa and are now interwoven into global foods and Black communities around the world today.
Furthermore, The Hub as we call it for short, will be an irreplaceable educational resource for individuals to learn more about their own culture through food as well as different food cultures of others, while connecting the dots that unify Black people.
Preserving Black Food History Because It Matters
Food has existed for as long as there are records of the first humans on earth. Over time, as humans have evolved, so has the food in various forms.
The Global Food Learning Hub also serves as a safe space for Black food history to be learned and shared with people from around the world authentically.
Collectively, it will show how Black people use food as a source for both survival and innovation. How it shapes individuals, communities and economies and acts as a thread to bring people together.
Black food history is a part of world history and rightfully deserves a dedicated space to be shared and celebrated. That place is The Global Black Food Learning Hub.
