Each fall, The Global Food and Drink Initiative (GFDI) kicks off its annual giving campaign where donors, to include readers, corporate supporters and more, can support the organization with a donation starting at $5.
“With each year that goes by, I see more and more the impact of our work that started with Cuisine Noir in 2009 before launching our nonprofit to expand the work,” says GFDI executive director and founder Sheree Williams.
Why Support Storytelling
This year’s campaign aims to raise $5000 by December 31. Each dollar donated will support the organization’s mission to tell stories through an authentic lens representing history and culture.
“The mission of the Global Food and Drink Initiative (GFDI) to preserve food and drink history, cultures and languages of the African diaspora resonates and touches me. I love GFDI’s approach to storytelling, all their content and seeing the highlights of Black entrepreneurs and learning about their work. It’s important and impactful for GFDI to share their stories and celebrate success so future generations can learn and be inspired,” noted San Francisco donor Stephanie Haughey.
With more and more interest in Black food culture and cuisines that represent the African diaspora than ever before, the storytelling that GFDI is doing continues to be important and impactful in shaping narratives that will inform current and future generations.
It doesn’t take much to help make an impact. Here is how donor contributions support our work:
- Pay the monthly fee of an administrative cost of a service such as Zoom that allows us to connect with stories in the U.S. and globally.
- Cover license fees for photography used in our feature stories
- Weekly and monthly maintenance of sites (GFDI, Cuisine Noir and Diaspora Food Stories) to ensure maximum performance
- Work with a talented team of writers and journalists
- Produce and distribute Diaspora Food Stories podcast
“Although we have been doing this work for a long time, history continues to unfold, the amount of talent in food and drink keeps getting better and better and the number of stories before us infinite it seems,” shares Sheree.
She continues, “We really welcome support from everyone who understands the importance of telling Black stories and recognizes that it is not an even playing field out here in the media space, we must create our and support our own platforms to tell the stories we want to know and read about.”
